International training programme: Healthy livestock - safe food
Healthy Livestock - Safe Food is a SIDA-funded programme that aims to provide participating institutions with improved conditions for healthy and sustainable food production, where healthy animals, good animal welfare and responsible use of antibiotics play a central role.
The programme is led by SVA in collaboration with SLU, the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the Swedish Food Agency, and SCAW participates in the project management of the programme together with the Department of Animal Sciences. Partner countries are Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and participants represent various actors in the food sector, from local, regional and central authorities to private actors, NGOs and universities.
The participants receive training in animal health, disease control, epidemiology, animal welfare, antibiotic resistance, etc., and study visits are conducted to authorities, farms and slaughterhouses in both Sweden and participating partner countries. The participants also carry out a change project within their respective organisations, which contributes to capacity building. Knowledge exchange and networking between participants, both within and between countries, is an important part of the programme.
The programme contributes to Sida's overall goal of reducing rural poverty, which is achieved by strengthening the capacity of participating institutions.
