International training programme: Healthy livestock - safe food
A SIDA program that, through increased competence and capacity, improve the conditions for healthy and sustainable food production, where healthy animals with good welfare and responsible antibiotic use play a central role.
SCAW is participating together with the Department of Clinical Sciences in a five-year capacity development program (International training program) in East Africa on the theme "Healthy animals - safe food". The program, which is financed by Sida, is led by SVA in collaboration with SLU, the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the Swedish National Food Administration. Partner countries in East Africa are Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia and the participants represent various actors in the food sector from local, regional and central authorities to private actors and universities, etc.
The program contributes to SIDA's overall goal of reducing poverty in rural areas, which is achieved by strengthening the capacity of participating institutions. Through increased competence and capacity, the conditions for healthy and sustainable food production are improved, where healthy animals with good welfare and responsible antibiotic use play a central role.
The program is implemented in five rounds and participants from the partner countries first participate in a three-week training part in Sweden with lectures in animal health, infection control, epidemiology, animal welfare, antibiotic resistance, etc., as well as study visits to, among other things, authorities, farms and slaughterhouses. The participants also carry out a change project through their respective workplaces, which is the most important part of the program and contributes to capacity building. Each round ends with the participants meeting in a participating country. Due to covid-19, certain adjustments to the program have had to be made during 2020-2022.
