At the Department of Aquatic Resources, we collaborate with authorities, commercial fisheries, companies, fishing and water conservation associations, and non-governmental organisations within the blue economy.

With our extensive knowledge in ecology, fish biology, and technological development, we work together with other stakeholders to create new knowledge and innovations to solve complex issues related to the utilisation of water resources.

Our external collaboration specialist: Örjan Östman

Hello! I am a senior lecturer and external collaboration specialists in coastal and marine ecology, working with commercial fisheries, authorities, and interest organisations. Welcome to collaborate with us for better and smarter resource use from water and for sustainable development.

Examples of areas of collaboration

Sustainable fishing requires that the fishing gear is environmentally friendly and selectively catches the species or sizes of interest. We have extensive experience in collaborating with commercial fisheries to jointly develop fishing gear and methods aimed at reducing bycatch of undersized fish or porpoises, developing seal-safe fishing gear, or minimising the impact of fishing gear on ecosystems.

We collaborate with anglers, local and regional fishing and water associations on data collection and analysis for advisory purposes – this is done based on local and regional conditions. An example of successful local collaboration between SLU Aqua, authorities, and fishing and water conservation associations includes management plans and fishing regulations that have led to an increased population of pikeperch in Lake Mälaren and Lake Hjälmaren, more salmon in Lake Vättern, and more large pike and pikeperch in no-fishing areas along the coast.

We collaborate with water owners, interest organisations, municipalities, and county administrative boards on practical measures and innovations to improve aquatic ecosystems. With our knowledge, we develop and test new types of measures and solutions to restore or rehabilitate aquatic ecosystems. Through research in collaboration with water owners, entrepreneurs, interest organisations, and private financiers, we have, together with the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare, developed reed harvesting as fodder to reclaim nutrients from eutrophic waters and restore biodiversity.

A large part of our collaboration takes place through knowledge transfer to Swedish authorities and international organisations. We have a holistic approach, from data collection and analysis to the delivery of knowledge support and expert advice. Our collaboration with authorities and organisations is essential for sustainable fishing and resource utilisation of Swedish and international waters.
