Fish monitoring in rivers and streams – SERS

Page reviewed:  11/02/2026

Welcome to the database for fish monitoring in rivers and streams. Here, you can download data from over 81,000 surveys across 22,000 sites in Swedish watercourses and find information for those conducting environmental monitoring using electrofishing methods.

The  database for fish monitoring in rivers and streams is officially called the Swedish Electrofishing Register (SERS). It is the national database for electrofishing data and has been in use since 1989. All data is available to the public.

Temporary suspension of reporting to SERS
We are currently unable to receive electrofishing protocols. We are working hard to launch the new database so that we can receive your surveys via the app, and we kindly ask all users to be patient until this is completed. Hopefully this will be resolved in March, but no later than May. If the results are urgent, you are welcome to use our own VIX calculator until you can once again report your surveys to the database via El-Reg.

Data for research, red lists, and ecological status

The data is used in national assessments, such as evaluating the ecological status of our waterways, as well as in monitoring fishery management actions (e.g., liming, building fish passages, and habitat restoration). Data from the database is also used in research projects and national compilations, such as the SLU Swedish Species Information Centre's red list.
