Courses in fish monitoring techniques

At the Department of Aquatic Resources we offer courses in fish sampling from lakes and waterways. These methods are considered animal experimentation under Swedish law, requiring an approved application as well as proper education and training to monitor fish.

At the Department of Aquatic Resources we arrange courses in fish sampling using four different techniques:

  1. Electrofishing.
  2. Multi-mesh gillnets.
  3. Trawling + hydroacoustics.
  4. Other methods.

Legislation and ethics - a requirement for test fishing

In order to participate in our fish sampling courses, you need to pass the course Swedish legislation & ethics, animal welfare and 3R. This course is included when you log into the learning platform.

Course structure

Theory

  • The theoretical parts are web-based, and the courses are possible to do at any time of the year.
  • For the practical part of the course, you will choose one or more of the four test fishing methods. NOTE: These courses are being held in Swedish, English versions will be available in the future.

Practical training

  • We arrange the practical training in Älvkarleby, Stockholm (Drottningholm), Öregrund or Lysekil. NOTE! Not all four techniques are available at all places.

Course fee and certificate

The fee for the course Swedish legislation & ethics, animal welfare and 3R is 1600 SEK and then each test fishing method costs 1000 SEK per method. In addition, there is a cost of 2000 SEK (excluding costs for travel, board and lodging that the course participants are responsible for themselves) for the practical part if it is organised by SLU. An invoice will be sent to you by mail and a course certificate will be sent out when all fees are paid.
