Physiotherapists who want to work in animal health care

The Department of Clinical Sciences offers independent courses in veterinary nursing at advanced level (master's level), so that you as a physiotherapist can meet the Swedish Board of Agriculture's requirements for eligibility to work in animal health care.

A total of three courses are offered: an introductory course exclusively for physiotherapists, and two courses on rehabilitation that are studied together with students in the master's program in Veterinary Nursing. All three courses must have a passing grade in order to meet the requirements of the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

Courses

The introduction course is called Introduction for physiotherapists.

The aim of the course is to provide a general introductory education on working in animal health care, focusing on dogs, cats and horses.

The course comprises 10 credits (högskolepoäng in Swedish), and is given at one-third speed and distance learning during the autumn semester. The course is required in order to fulfill the eligibility requirements for the following courses. The course is taught in Swedish.

 

The second course is about rehabilitation and is called Principles and scientific fundaments within veterinary rehabilitation.

The aim of the course is for the student, with application to various types of physical impairments, to acquire a theoretical and some practical knowledge regarding a selection of evaluation and treatment methods current in rehabilitation in animal care, mainly regarding the horse, dog and cat species.

The course comprises 15 credits (högskolepoäng in Swedish) and is also part of the master's program in Veterinary Nursing. The course is given full-time in period 3 (first half of the spring semester). The course is taught in English.

The third course is about rehabilitation, and will be given for the first time in the fall semester of 2026, during the second year of the Master's program in Veterinary Nursing. It will be given full-time in period 2 (the second half of the fall semester) and the course is thaught in English. More information about this course will come soon.

The courses offered by SLU meet the requirements for additional training for physiotherapists set out in the Swedish Board of Agriculture's regulations and general advice on qualifications for animal health personnel (in Swedish: 2016:9, saknr C23), kap. 5, § 3 och § 6, samt bilagorna 7 och 9.
