Duckweed as an alternative protein feed for dairy cows in a changing climate
The potential of duckweed as an alternative to rapeseed meal.
Climate change and the need for more sustainable livestock production are increasing interest in alternative feed ingredients that can reduce reliance on conventional protein sources. Duckweed is a fast-growing aquatic plant with a relatively high protein content and the potential to be used as an alternative protein feed for dairy cows. However, knowledge about how duckweed affects ruminal fermentation when replacing conventional protein feeds is still limited.
In this project, we aim to explore the potential of duckweed as an alternative to rapeseed meal, a commonly used protein feed in dairy cow diets. Through a short-term exploratory study, we will investigate how replacing rapeseed meal with dried duckweed influences ruminal fermentation and whether it alters the processes involved in feed digestion and nutrient utilization.
The project will provide preliminary insights into the potential of duckweed as an alternative protein source and help guide future research on more sustainable feeding strategies for dairy cows.
We are now looking for a master's student interested in sustainable animal nutrition and alternative feed resources to join our research team!
