Analysis Laboratory
We offer advanced analyses covering the entire production chain – from raw ingredients and feed to animal response and final product quality.
With a focus on feed and milk analysis, as well as biological samples such as blood and faeces, we support research, development, and education both within SLU and through external collaborations.
What We Analyse
We specialise in analysing samples across the full production cycle – from raw materials to finished products.
Common sample types:
- Feed and raw materials: forage, cereals, concentrate feed, plant material, press juice, mussels, etc.
- Animal products: milk, meat, eggs, fish
- Biological samples: blood, tissue, urine, faeces
Common analytical parameters:
- Dry matter
- Ash
- Crude protein (Kjeldahl method)
- Soluble and fibre-bound nitrogen
- Ammonium nitrogen
- Free amino acids
- Nitrate/nitrite
- Extractable (EG) fat
- Fatty acids
- Volatile fatty acids (VFA)
- Sugars and starch
- NDF, ADF, lignin
- Plant fibre
- Water-soluble organic matter (VOS)
- Buffering capacity (for silage)
Methods we use:
- Kjeldahl
- Soxtec
- HPLC/UHPLC
- Gas chromatography (GC)
- ELISA
- In sacco (rumen degradability)
- Gas in vitro (degradation kinetics in rumen and hundgut)
Our Equipment
We use modern, specialised laboratory equipment to ensure high precision and reliable results. Below is an overview of our technical capacity:

- Freeze dryers, drying ovens, muffle furnaces
- Mills for grinding feed and plant material
- Bomb calorimeter
- Spectrophotometers
- Microplate readers
Quantitative and chemical analysis:
- Kjeltec (crude protein)
- Soxtec (fat)
- FTIR (milk analysis)
- AutoAnalyzer and FIA
- Chromatography:
- HPLC
- UHPLC
- GC
Molecular biology and physiology:
- PCR and gel electrophoresis equipment
- Ussing chamber
