Doctoral education

Are you interested in learning about and developing new knowledge for more sustainable agriculture and forestry? Or are you interested in ecological systems and basic research? Our doctoral program provides a scientific approach, subject knowledge, and training in pedagogy and leadership.

The program equips the doctoral student with the skills and knowledge required to develop into independent researchers who contribute to advancements in their academic field. The goal of the four-year doctoral is to get a PhD degree, the highest academic degree. 

Regular Progress Reviews

The majority of the program consists of independent research and thesis work, with a smaller portion dedicated to coursework. At three different stages of the program, we conduct progress reviews to assess what is needed for the project to proceed successfully. To be eligible for a doctoral program in biology, you need a Master’s degree in biology or an equivalent qualification.

The department offers doctoral education in the subject areas

  • biology,
  • biology with specialisation in ecology,
  • biology with specialisation in plant pathology,
  • and biology with specialisation in microbiology.

The research at the Department spans both applied and fundamental studies on interactions among plants, pathogens, symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi, decomposer fungi, bacteria, archaea and other soil fauna, as well as their roles in forests and agricultural lands.

PhD Day

Each fall, we organise PhD Day, where all students present their projects to the department. The entire Department participates, discussing the projects in smaller groups. As a doctoral student, you receive feedback on both your project and your presentation skills. This is an excellent opportunity to gain new ideas and practice presenting your research. Other people at the Department look forward to the event as it is an exciting opportunity to learn about new research being conducted at the Department.
