Reference Laboratory for bee health

Page reviewed:  11/06/2025

The department runs the National Reference Laboratory for Bee Health.

We analyse samples of adult bees and brood sent to us by bee inspectors from across the country. Analyses of notifiable diseases such as American foulbrood are free of charge for beekeepers. We analyse other suspected diseases by agreement on compensation or as part of research projects.

The laboratory is responsible for surveillance of honey bee diseases in Sweden and yearly reports on infectious diseases and parasites in honey bees can be found in the National Veterinary Institute, SVA's report, 'Surveillance of infectious diseases in animals and humans'.

You can read more about the laboratory in Swedish.
