Independent project

Page reviewed:  08/04/2025

Independent projects (thesis courses) must be processed in accordance with the same procedures as other higher education at SLU. However, in some respects, independent projects differ from other courses.

Writing a student thesis as an independent project is done in Swedish or English, as indicated in the course syllabus. You will usually report on the project both in writing and orally.

As a student, you are primarily responsible for the completion of the independent project and SLU has a responsibility to create good conditions to help you carry out the project. Each student must therefore have a supervisor. The supervisor and the examiner cannot be the same person.

All independent projects will be checked for plagiarism before being approved and subsequently published in SLU’s electronic archive for student projects.

Subject focus

In general, theses can be supervised by all of the department's researchers in business administration and economics. To ensure a good match, supervisors are assigned based on a short essay proposal from the student.

Theses in business administration are supervised primarily by researchers from the research groups Decision-making and Managerial Behaviour and Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Sustainability.

Theses in economics are supervised primarily by researchers from the groups Agricultural and Food Economics and Environmental Economics.

Please read more about our research groups and our published student theses for inspiration on possible thesis topics.
