National soil type mapping

Page reviewed:  12/05/2026

The Swedish Board of Agriculture has carried out an extensive soil mapping programme of topsoil in Swedish arable land, with the aim of improving knowledge of the properties of Swedish arable soils.

In total, topsoil samples from around 12,600 locations were analysed and the clay content, pH, phosphorus content and potassium content were determined.

A searchable database for topsoil in Sweden

The database for the National soil type mapping is hosted by SLU, where survey data can be searched and downloaded as statistics by selected area (county, municipality, or main catchment area) or as analytical results for sampling points. However, coordinates for the sampling points are classified; they may be released for research and statistical compilations following a security clearance or eligibility assessment.

Improved soil type maps

A new and improved soil type map, as well as maps showing the nutrient status of topsoil, have also been developed by SLU on behalf of the Swedish Board of Agriculture. These were based on results from the 12,600 soil samples and data from 2,000 sampling points within the environmental monitoring survey: The Soil and crop inventory.

Information regarding the national soil mapping can also be found on the Swedish Board of Agriculture's website (in Swedish).
