About us
We are a multi- and trans-disciplinary department. In our research and teaching we focus on the societal aspects of SLU’s areas of responsibility.
We primarily conduct research and education in the social sciences, humanities, and design sciences, focusing on development, planning, and communication.
Our research is often carried out in close collaboration with societal actors, which both strengthens sustainable societal development and enriches our research and education.
The department has the main responsibility for 7 education programmes and about 90 courses. We run a research school in collaboration with the Department of Economics.
We employ just over 130 full-time staff members.
There are 5 subject divisions that conducts research and education
- Agrarian Historiy – Provides a deeper understanding of contemporary landscapes and agriculture through historical perspectives
- Landscape Architecture – Designs landscapes that preservs and develops ecological, social, and aesthetic qualities
- Rural Development – strengthens sustainable development in rural areas all over the world.
- Environmental Communication – Improves processes for dialogue and collaboration on environmental and sustainability issues.
- Political Science and Natural Resource Governance – Explores power, politics, and governance with a focus on environment and sustainability.
