Greenhouses

The Cultivation Unit manages and oversees the Exposé House, the Small Greenhouse, and the greenhouses at Horticum and Vegetum.

One of the greenhouses is connected to Horticum and the other to Vegetum. Together, the greenhouses cover an area of approximately 2,300 m².

The main differences between the greenhouses include the type of cultivation systems, chamber sizes, covering materials, and cultivation focus.

Both greenhouses are controlled by climate computers. In addition to standard climate control, nearly all greenhouse sections are equipped with shade curtains, humidity control, and lighting systems.

The greenhouse at Horticum is intended for the propagation of plant material used in advanced basic research, particularly on plant resistance. The cultivation tables in this greenhouse are of the ebb-and-flow rolling bench type. All chambers, except one, are equipped with artificial lighting. There are also two sand-bed chambers, one of which is used during winter as a space for overwintering and vernalization.

Manual watering is required in the Horticum greenhouse. The ebb-and-flow benches can be filled with water to saturate the pots, provided the material on the bench is homogeneous.

The greenhouse at Vegetum is primarily intended for research on how climate affects plants. Several chambers have daylength control, either throughout the entire chamber or within specific blackout tents.

Most chambers have mesh tables designed for troughs with automated irrigation. In addition, there are areas designated for cultivation carts or "biotron carts." Two chambers have flat concrete floors to accommodate crops that are not suited to bench growing.

In the Vegetum greenhouse, some plant material is watered automatically, while other areas require manual watering. Daily inspections mainly focus on checking technical systems, making necessary climate adjustments, and ensuring general order and tidiness.

The greenhouses are owned by Akademiska Hus and leased by SLU. The interior equipment, including the climate computers, is owned by SLU.
