The report ‘Complementary and alternative treatment methods for sport- and companion animals – a systematic literature review’ summarises the scientific evidence available on different CAVM practices (complementary and alternative veterinary medicine). It provides an overview that has so far been lacking in the field. It also gives the reader an idea of the extent of the scientific basis of the methods and detailed information on the state of knowledge.
The report is a systematic literature review of complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (KAVM) with a focus on the scientific quality of the methods regarding the effect on horses, dogs and cats. Acupuncture, electrotherapy, light therapy and soft tissue treatment are some of the treatment methods included in the study. The study is based on more than 16,000 articles, published between 1980 and 2020.
The report aims to raise the level of knowledge among animal health professionals, therapists, animal owners, insurance companies and authorities. The literature review has resulted in an overview of a number of methods (within the groups acupuncture, electrotherapy, light therapy, soft tissue treatment, mobilization and manipulation methods, and "other methods") with a focus on the clinical effect of the methods. Several of these methods are also included in human healthcare.
This is the second report in the SLU Future One Health report series. The report is mainly written in Swedish, with an abstract in English.
