EMA programmes

SLU's environmental monitoring and assessment (EMA) meets society's need for decision support in twelve programmes. They are linked to Sweden's national environmental objectives, the global goals for sustainable development and other international environmental cooperation.

    Alpine/Arctic Landscapes programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Alpine/Arctic Landscapes brings together SLU’s expertise on alpine and arctic landscapes and supports Sweden’s national and international commitments related to the environmental quality objective “A Magnificent Mountain Landscape” and the conservation of Arctic biodiversity.

    Forests programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Forests at SLU has extensive knowledge and experience of Swedish and international forest environmental analysis. The programme supports Sweden’s work on the environmental objective Sustainable Forests and other Swedish environmental objectives related to forests. Internationally, the programme’s expertise contributes to the development of forest monitoring, both within the EU and globally.

    Agricultural Landscapes programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Agricultural Landscapes at SLU monitors the agricultural landscape and contributes to an overall picture of the environmental quality in the agricultural landscape. The results are used for evaluations of the Swedish environmental objectives, follow-up of EU's agricultural policies and in international reporting on environmental qualities.

    Built Environment programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Built Environment at SLU maps and analyses the city and its surroundings. The results are intended to help in the achievement of Sweden's environmental quality objective "Good Built Environment" as well as Sweden's international commitments on urban and peri-urban environments.

    Lakes and Watercourses programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Lakes and Watercourses at SLU provides data and expertise to further Sweden's environmental objective of Flourishing Lakes and Streams, as well as other objectives related to water quality. We also support various public agencies in their work under the EC Water Framework Directive and on Sweden's other international water quality commitments.

    Coastal and Sea Areas programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Coastal and Sea Areas at SLU gathers SLU's expertise on marine environments and their assessment with special emphasis on fish and shellfish stocks and communities. The programme has a strong international dimension and includes more than sixty projects and activities, including, for example, environmental monitoring and analyses, marine spatial planning, ecosystem-based management, and advice and analyses for fish and fisheries.

    Eutrophication programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Eutrophication at SLU is intended to provide data on which to base action to combat eutrophication of our aquatic systems. It should provide an up-to-date picture of the source and size of eutrophication sources and their development over time. A key element is to provide material for monitoring achievement of the environmental objectives and international commitments. The programme also provides assessment of the effectiveness of measures taken in various sectors of society.

    A Non-Toxic Environment programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment A Non-Toxic Environment at SLU provides decision support and expertise in the work towards a non-toxic environment in Sweden. The data from our monitoring programmes contribute to the overall picture of the environmental status regarding hazardous substances.  We also assess the risks with hazardous substances and their effects, and support the work with Sweden's international commitments on environmental pollutants.

    Climate programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Climate at SLU aims to support efforts to achieve the Reduced Climate Impact environmental objective. In the near term, priority is being given to Sweden's international climate reporting in the land-use, land-use change and forestry sectors. Results are used to monitor compliance with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.

    Acidification programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Acidification at SLU provides a platform for efforts to achieve Sweden's environmental objective Natural Acidification Only. We also help Sweden to meet its commitments under the UNECE/CLRTAP air pollution convention.

    Biodiversity programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Biodiversity at SLU monitors and analyses the state and trends of Swedish biodiversity, to support efforts to achieve the Swedish environmental objectives regarding biodiversity. We also provide a basis for monitoring of compliance with the Biodiversity Convention, the EC Habitats and Birds Directives and Sweden's other international biodiversity commitments.

    Wildlife programme

    The programme for environmental monitoring and assessment Wildlife at SLU provides environmental assessments of wildlife populations and their impacts on forestry, agriculture and biodiversity. Furthermore, we develop and validate methods for monitoring wildlife and its impacts on wildlife.
