Information on the species on the Red List is available in Artfakta - facts and information about Swedish species.

Red listing is a method developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to assess species’ risk of extinction. The Swedish Red List is compiled by the Swedish Species Information Centre at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and is a compilation of the extinction risk of species in Sweden. The Red List provides an important knowledge base for monitoring environmental objectives and for identifying and prioritizing nature conservation efforts.

To date, six Red Lists have been published for Sweden using the IUCN's categories and criteria for red listing. The 2025 Red List was adopted on 24 March 2026 and will remain valid until the next Red List is published.

The 2020 and 2025 Red List datasets are available via the Researchdata.se portal. The published datasets include information on:

  • Species that are categorized as red-listed
  • The criteria leading to the red-list category and supporting documentation
  • The categories they are listed in: Regionally Extinct (RE), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT) or Data Deficient (DD)
  • Factors that may have a negative impact on the species’ survival in Sweden
  • Information about the species' regional occurrence, and their association with landscape types, biotopes and substrates.

Artfakta.se displays the current Red List status of species, as well as previous assessments dating back to 2000. As Artfakta.se is updated continuously based on new knowledge and taxonomic changes, the taxonomy of species and their association with landscape types, biotopes, and substrates may differ over time from the datasets on Researchdata.se.

Further information about the Red Lists and the Red List assessment process is available on the Artdatabanken website (In Swedish).
