We focus on nutrition, housing and management of meat-type chickens and laying hens including solutions that combine improved animal welfare, high competitiveness and low environmental impact. Our research comprises both conventional and alternative production systems.

Our goal is to develop and pass on knowledge of meat-type chickens and laying hens with a focus on nutrition, management and housing. Through successful research, we strive to find solutions that improve the welfare and health of animals and create conditions for profitable production with low environmental impact. The products, eggs and meat, should be safe to consume and be of high quality from a consumer perspective. Our research comprises both conventional and alternative production systems for laying hens and meat-type chickens.

Key areas

  • Alternative sources of feed ingredients for reduced dependence on imported raw materials
  • Raw materials with bioactive substances for improved animal health and production
  • Protein sources that can replace fish meal in organic poultry feed
  • Reduced ammonia emission in poultry barns through adjustments to poultry feeds
  • Reduced ammonia emission in poultry barns with alternative litter materials
  • Links between nutrition and poultry health and production
  • Reduced condemnation at chicken slaughter through adjustments in management and feeding
