Short summary
The project CEforestry establishes cooperation among researchers, SMEs and large companies to support industrial symbiosis using forestry biomass residues in a more efficient way.
CEforestry-Innovation in forestry biomass residue processing: towards circular forestry with added value products. The possibility of attaining additional innovation opportunities and earnings has been of interest to forest owners and forestry companies. However, there are also uncertainty factors and challenges to which this project aims to find responses for, e.g. in the form of policy recommendations.
The objective of CEforestry has been to develop new and innovative practices in forestry and novel solutions to utilize forestry side stream in Baltic Sea Region. By developing eco-friendly extraction methods and exploring various applications, the project partners are turning biomass “waste” into valuable resources.
An online map of available underutilized sawmill biomass residues has been created and a techno-economic analysis is ongoing in three application cases: production of extracts from spruce needles for food analogues; fermentation of spruce needle product for food analogues and isolation of tannins from bark for biocide application.
The extracts from birch inner bark and spruce bark have been applied for the treatment of leather and as antimicrobial compounds in industrial waste water system respectively with successful results.
The coordination of the project together with the cooperation between the partners, create a brand new network in this research area, both in each country and generally in Baltic Sea Region.
