Short summary

We are studying the Swedish breeds of landrace chickens. The landraces are interesting to study because they are adapted to the local environment of the regions in which they existed. Only a few individuals remained of each breed when they were saved from extinction.

The aim is to characterize the genetic variation in these breeds. We will investigate which species that have most genetic variation and how closely the breeds are related to each other. These investigations are important for conservation strategies of these breeds and are also a first step to future investigations of the relationship between traits and specific gene variants.
