Short summary
Wildlife populations provide benefits such as experiences of nature and game meat, but can also constrain agriculture and forestry. In Co-management of Wildlife in Production Landscapes, we study how wildlife is managed in relation to other interests.
Wildlife management draws on both ecological knowledge of interactions between wildlife and their habitats and knowledge of attitudes towards wildlife and its management. To understand the co-management of wildlife in relation to other interests, we therefore need not only ecological knowledge but also an understanding of people’s perceptions, attitudes and behaviour.
In Co-management of Wildlife in Production Landscapes, we conduct social surveys alongside ecological monitoring of how wildlife populations respond to different management measures and the consequences for agriculture, forestry and the use of wildlife as a resource.
We use repeated surveys of hunters, forest owners and farmers to examine how objectives, attitudes, trust and perceived conflicts affect decisions and implementation in the co-management of ungulates, agriculture and forestry. We also examine their willingness to implement different management measures and contribute to different monitoring efforts.
The project rests on longitudinal data from repeated surveys aimed at hunters, forest owners and farmers since 2006.
