Chemistry laboratory

Page reviewed:  25/06/2025

Svea’s chemistry laboratory is designed to enable accurate and efficient analysis of water chemistry directly on board.

The lab is equipped to handle a wide range of analyses, including pH, dissolved oxygen, and hydrogen sulphide concentrations. Its strategic location, adjacent to the CTD hangar and the wet lab, ensures a smooth workflow from sampling to analysis.

Please note: Not all laboratory equipment is part of the vessel’s standard instrumentation. The equipment is owned by SMHI, accredited by SWEDAQ, and may only be used by prior agreement with SMHI. Please contact us well in advance of your expedition.

Equipment and capabilities:

  • Spectrophotometer – for measurements such as hydrogen sulphide
  • Titrator, pH and pCO₂ instruments – for studies related to ocean acidification
  • Titrator – for determining dissolved oxygen concentrations
  • Fume hood – for safe handling of chemicals
  • Ventilated chemical cabinet – for storing corrosive substances and other hazardous materials
  • Purified water system
  • Laboratory dishwasher
  • Filtration equipment – for chlorophyll, eDNA, and other sample processing
  • Refrigerators and freezers – including ultra-low temperature storage down to -80°C for chemicals and/or biological samples
  • Autoclave
  • Ultrasonic bath
  • Photo box – for gelatinous plankton sampling
  • Microscopes
