The fish lab on Svea is designed for efficient handling of fish and other biological sampling.

The fish laboratory on board R/V Svea is a fully equipped workspace for handling, sorting, and sampling fish. The lab is spacious, durable, and purpose-built to support high-paced fieldwork in demanding conditions.

Available equipment includes:

  • Electronic measuring boards
  • Scales for both individual and batch weighing
  • Measuring boards, tagging stations, and label printers
  • Sample storage in walk-in freezers
  • Ultra-low temperature freezer (–80 °C) for sensitive samples
  • Digital data entry stations connected to the vessel’s network
  • Foam-coating machine and high-pressure washer for efficient cleaning

The workflow is carefully designed – from deck to sorting conveyor, then on to measuring stations, cooling and freezing – all with ergonomics in focus. All workstations and measuring equipment are height-adjustable. The lab is designed for multiple users to work simultaneously and can be easily combined with other sampling activities on board.

While ideal for collecting fish data, the fish lab is also adaptable for other types of biological analysis. It can be used in combination with Svea’s other laboratories, such as the wet lab and the chemistry lab.
