Sweden has been at the forefront of developments in building technology from passive house to plus energy buildings. Today it is possible, with existing technology, to build buildings that are not only self-sufficient in energy, they become small energy power plants that are part of the bigger energy system thanks to the use of passive design strategies used in conjunction with renewable energy systems. This presentation will give an overview of the developments in this area in the last 30 years and the giant leap forward achieved in the sector of energy-efficient buildings. It will also point to the challenges ahead regarding embodied energy of building materials.
