BEYOND will train the next generation of water professionals who will deliver scientific and technological innovation across disciplines, institutions and countries needed to solve European water quality problems in an era of global change.

Improving European Flowing Waters in an Era of Global Change

BEYOND is a pioneering EU-funded Doctoral Network training the next generation of water professionals to tackle Europe's water quality crisis. Our mission is to move "beyond the current" approaches by developing innovative solutions for sustainable water management in a changing climate.

Our Challenge

60% of European water bodies fail to achieve good ecological status despite costly mitigation efforts. Climate change, agricultural intensification, and emerging pollutants threaten our freshwater ecosystems, biodiversity, and public health.

Our Approach

We train 10 doctoral researchers across 8 leading institutions and 30+ partners to:

  • Deploy cutting-edge monitoring technologies and models
  • Understand pollution from source to impact across multiple scales
  • Develop cost-effective, catchment-specific solutions
  • Bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice
  • Engage citizens in water quality protection
  • Our Impact

BEYOND delivers:

  • Advanced tools for real-time water quality monitoring
  • Evidence-based strategies for multiple pollutant management
  • Climate-resilient water management solutions
  • A new generation of interdisciplinary water professionals
  • Stronger connections between researchers, water managers, industry, and citizens

Join us in securing clean water for Europe's future!
