miRNA - a new diagnostic for migratory roundworm in young horses
The horse roundworm is a common parasite in Swedish stud farms where it infects foals. Foals are usually treated for roundworm regularly without prior fecal sampling, but in recent years the parasite has developed resistance to all available deworming agents.
Background
The horse roundworm is a common parasite in Swedish stud farms where it infects foals. Foals are usually treated for roundworm regularly without prior fecal sampling, but in recent years the parasite has developed resistance to all available deworming agents. There are no diagnostics to detect the migratory phase of larvae in the lung.
Goal
To investigate miRNAs in young horses with an ongoing roundworm infection in serum and lung lavage (BAL) samples.
Project description
Foals with a natural parasitic infection are participating in the study from two stud farms. Serum and BAL will be collected every 4 weeks. miRNAs will be purified from the samples and analyzed with a qPCR. You will help with the sample collection, purify miRNA and perform qPCR
Specifications
