Education

At the Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua), we offer education and courses for those interested in fish and fishing, marine biology, limnology, and aquatic ecology. We offer standalone courses at both undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as doctoral education in environmental analysis and biology with a focus on ecology. There is also the opportunity to do your bachelor's and master's thesis with us.

Our courses
Pike under water

Where have all the fishes gone? – 7.5 credits

Are you interested in how to combine lakes, rivers, streams and seas full of life with sustainable fishing? Do you have general eligibility for university studies? Then perhaps an evening web-based course on urgent sustainability issues could be suitable for you this fall?

Ecology for Fish Management and Conservation – 15 credits

Are you interested in fish, fishery management, and nature conservation? In the master's course "Ecology for Fish Management and Conservation" you will learn more about fish and their habitats, and apply your new knowledge of fish ecology in ongoing management and fishery conservation projects. The course also includes exciting field visits and practical training in fish sampling methods.

Principles of Fisheries Science – 15 credits

Here you will learn what is required for a fishery to be sustainably managed in the long term. You will also learn how data collection, biological analyses, and stock assessments are carried out. The course includes a visit to Lysekil and the Swedish West Coast, where you will participate in laboratory work and join a trawl survey aboard the research vessel M/S Hålabben.

Study for a whole year with us

We offer two master's level courses that receive high ratings from our students: 'Ecology for Fish Management and Conservation' and 'Principles of Fisheries Science.' If you take them as a package and complete an independent project, you will earn a full academic year's worth of studies. The courses can be credited towards a master's or master's degree.
Three graduate students are discussing mathematical formulas at a whiteboard filled with equations. One person points to the board with a pencil while the other two listen and take notes.

Doctoral education

As a PhD student you will work on ongoing research projects led by leading experts in fish and fisheries biology.

A group of people in waders are electrofishing in a small stream surrounded by lush forest. A man in waders and a cap holds a net and an electrofishing rod while talking to the others, who are holding a black bucket and other equipment. The environment is natural and humid, with rocks and branches in the water

Courses in fish monitoring techniques

At the Department of Aquatic Resources, we organise courses in fish survey techniques and laboratory animal science.
