Part of the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare's analytical operations is located at SLU campus Umeå. The laboratory is and is equipped for advanced chemical and biological analysis.
Analytical laboratory
The laboratory includes equipment for:
- Microscopy and image documentation
- Gas chromatography (GC)
- Nitrogen analysis (e.g., for crude protein)
- Molecular biology methods such as PCR and gel scanning
- Small drying ovens and muffle furnaces (for determination of dry matter and ash content)
- Ball mill and Cyclo Tech cyclone mill (for sample preparation)
- Sterile room
- N¹⁵-labeled sample room
Gas In Vitro Laboratoy
Adjacent to the analytical lab is a gas in vitro laboratory, equipped for:
- Measurement of gas production over a 72-hour period
- Analysis of nitrogen degradation
- Determination of gas composition
- The facility can handle up to 36 samples simultaneously, distributed across three water baths.
