Experimental forests and stations

The experimental forests provide land for various types of field experiments and are responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and data collection. The research activities include both basic and more applied studies.

Experimental forests

An experimental forest is a designated land area set aside specifically for research in field trials, sampling, or long-term monitoring, such as of a watershed.

The staff at the research stations administer the experimental forests and carry out measures, surveys, and maintain field trials across the country.

The experimental forests and research stations managed by the unit are:

History

The experiemental forests were established with the goal of concentrating numerous field trials in carefully studied and well-described areas to achieve cost-effective operations, minimize the risks of unwanted disturbances, study the effects of forestry practices on a large scale under controlled conditions, and serve as a gathering place for forestry excursions. Significant resources were therefore invested in the inventory of factors such as soil conditions, vegetation, and forest health. Meteorological weather stations were also established, and their data is compiled into annual reports.

At several of the experimental forests, staff are stationed year-round. Additionally, each experimental forest has a scientific advisor. Extensive excursion activities are carried out with both Swedish and international groups as visitors.
