Education at the Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology

Page reviewed:  16/04/2026

We contribute to education from a foundation year to Master’s programmes in plant biology and sustainable production. As part of Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), our teaching is closely linked to internationally leading research.

Education in plant biology and sustainable production

Plants are central to our future – as sources of food, materials and medicines. Developing sustainable production requires an understanding of plant function, genetics and interactions with the environment.

With us, you gain insights into topics ranging from fundamental plant biology to applied research in agriculture and forestry.

Our programmes

We are involved in several programmes at both undergraduate and advanced levels.

Within the Forest Science programme, you will study tree biology, genetics and evolution, wood and biochemistry, as well as applied tree breeding and biotechnology. We also contribute to the Master of Science in Engineering programme in Bioresource Technology and the Natural Science Foundation Year (Green Track).

In addition, we are involved in two Master’s programmes at SLU and Umeå University. These programmes provide in-depth knowledge and skills to address challenges in sustainable agricultural and forest production, with strong links to research at Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC).
