The lake monitoring programme consists of a national part that includes sampling of 4,800 lakes, and a regional part that includes another 480 lakes. The total of 5 256 lakes are representative of Swedish lakes.

The results are used to follow up on environmental quality objectives, monitoring under the the Ordinance on Water Management, and work under the Nitrates Directive, the Water Framework Directive, the UN Convention on Air Pollution Control (CLRTAP) and other international agreements.

The programme started in 2007 and involves sampling the water chemistry of 800 lakes per year. After six years, 4,800 lakes have been sampled, with the first 800 lakes starting again.
