Political science is the scientific study of politics. Central to this are issues of democracy, power, politics, governance, and public administration at different levels.
At SLU, the research in political science focuses primarily at public policy, governance, transformation, public administration and citizen participation in the area of environmental and sustainability issues. The research is conducted in a multidisciplinary context and is highly relevant for practice.
Currently research is conducted within the following broad areas:
- Policy evaluation and implementation. Research on how sustainability is governed on national, regional and local level and its practical societal consequences.
- The role of different actors in contributing to societal transformation in relation to sustainability goals. We especially focus on actor-centred understandings of environmental integration.
- Environmental assessment, including SEA and EIA. Development of theory, practice, and collaboration.
- Education for sustainable development. With particular focus on students' learning to develop sustainability competencies, and the conditions and influence of teachers on education.
Political science is a new research subject at SLU and has been under construction since its start in autumn 2023. The subject is in a construction phase with the recruitment of several new employees, the development of postgraduate education as well as undergraduate education, and new collaborations with researchers within and outside the department.
