The Animal Genetics Laboratory works closely with the Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) on the various routine tests carried out on dogs, both in terms of specific DNA tests, pedigree checks and identity checks.

Internationally, some kennel clubs and breeding associations require that a dog to be exported or used in breeding has a so-called DNA profile. A DNA profile can be seen as a ‘genetic ID card’ based on a number of genetic markers in the genome. The markers used, microsatellites, have been validated by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG). These microsatellites are variable and often differ between individuals.  To produce a DNA profile, 23 ISAG markers are analyzed. Together, these gene variants form a unique profile for each individual, like a genetic fingerprint. Please note that a DNA profile does not indicate the breed of your dog. The DNA profile is according to the ISAG 2006 standard.

Pedigree controls

For investigations that do not go through the SKK

Samples are taken from all possible parents (including the mother) involved in the pedigree case. All puppies in the litter should be DNA typed. The form is completed and signed by both the owner and the veterinarian. The identity of the dog should be verified at the time of sampling. We recommend that blood samples are taken in the first instance. Samples taken with a mouth brush need to be re-analyzed to a greater extent and the response time may therefore be longer.

See instructions for the veterinarian in the order form.

In dogs, there are two common types of the pigment melanin: eumelanin (black) and pheomelanin (red or yellow). In Labradors and Flatcoated Retrievers, the red dogs fade to yellow. We test for gene variants for these colors.
