Background
VH barn management is intended for the education of, among others, animal agronomists and veterinarians, for the development of new technology in animal production, and for conducting high-class research in animal welfare, animal health, animal husbandry, and food production. It offers students, teachers, and researchers at SLU, as well as national and international colleagues in academia and industry, a unique environment for their activities.
The faculty's goal is a high occupancy with projects and reasonable pricing of the services offered. Pricing is based on basic financing, according to the faculty's annual decision on allocation of funds, and on cost-effective and rational operation of the facility as a whole.
Types of Fees:
Commissioned research must, according to SLU's regulatory letter, be carried out at full cost coverage. Co-financing with state grants or other funds is not allowed. For grant-funded research, co-financing is permitted.
For the faculty's and university's research, the researcher pays for the use of the facility according to the current price list. Needs for resources beyond the existing ones are financed by the individual experiment. Collaboration between faculties is encouraged. To stimulate efficient use of SLU's resources, all researchers, regardless of faculty affiliation, are given the same conditions to carry out projects in the facility.
For the faculty's undergraduate education, basic financing covers the cost of using the facility for programs and courses according to the current curriculum. Theses and new, special teaching moments that are developed may require special financing.
For theses carried out practically in the herds, no fee is normally charged; the costs for animals and staff are discussed in each individual case.
For external users who wish to carry out educational, development, or research projects, full cost coverage is applied. VH barn management provides a quote upon request from the customer.
How it works: When pricing the services VH barn management performs, we start from the current year's budgeted costs in the barns (only research). These costs are personnel costs, local costs, operating costs, depreciation costs, and overhead. These costs are then broken down into a start fee and animal fee for each barn/animal species.
Access to the research infrastructure
Make a research request in the form below. The research coordinator and staff at the research centre will reply with a recommendation for a research plan and a cost estimate for the research project. Contact research coordinators if you have any questions.
