Last year, the EU Nature Restoration Law was adopted, highlighting the growing importance of restoration. Restoration efforts are becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, as they aim to support not only ecological recovery but also deliver social benefits and reflect diverse societal values.
Nature Restoration was the focus for this year’s Interdisciplinary Academy (IDA) group: "Beyond restoration: Interdisciplinary exploration of restoration for present and future generations". The group has analysed existing restoration frameworks to investigate how these frameworks are applied and understood in restoration practices, including objectives, potential limitations, and key success factors when applied in real-world scenarios.
On August 28th, the group will first present the outcomes of their IDA project on interdisciplinary nature restoration integrating perspectives in blue and green environments. The presentation will focus on three aspects, (i) how interdisciplinarity manifests in different academic nature restoration frameworks, (ii) how restoration practitioners in Sweden understand nature restoration and the need to integrate different disciplines, (iii) how nature-based experiences can be used to bridge diverse perspectives in nature restoration projects.
Then, an invited external panel of experienced researchers and practitioners working on restoration will discuss what is required to put the EU Nature Restoration Law into practice while taking into account broader environmental and societal values and goals.
