Dataset about forest and forest damage
Here we we list various datasets on forest damage. Some of the datasets are publicly available, whilst others you need to contact person responsible for the data.
Fungi
Species identification of airborne fungi
A monitoring programme that tracks the population of established forest pathogens, funded by SLU in collaboration with the Swedish Forest Agency. Field surveys have been carried out annually (since 2012) at:
- Tönnersjöheden Experimental Park (56°42'N, 13°07'E)
- Outside Halmstad, Halland.
- Grimsö Research Station (59°43'N, 15°28'E)
- Lindesberg Municipality
- Svartberget Research Station in Vindeln (64°14'N, 19°46'E)
Monitoring of airborne fungal spores is also carried out at these same sites to detect regulated pathogens at an early stage.

Dutch elm disease on Gotland
The Swedish Forest Agency is responsible for monitoring of dutch elm disease. Fieldinventories has been ongoing sence 2005 and provides an up-to-date overview of the situation.

Damage cuased by insects
Spruce bark beetle population inventory
A monitoring programme that tracks population trends of the spruce bark beetle in Sweden. Field surveys are carried out in various reference areas across the country and involve recording the presence of the spruce bark beetle inside insect traps and damage caused by the beetle to trees in edge zones.
Since 2022, the SLU Forest Damage Centre has been responsible for the monitoring programme. Previously, it was managed by SLU and the Swedish Forest Agency.

Change analysis for spruce bark beetle
The Swedish Forest Agency using satellite imagery developed change analysis to detect potential spruce bark beetle infestations. The analysis shows where there have been changes in the vitality of spruce trees, which may indicate an infestation.

Swarming monitoring Spruce Bark Beetle
Yearly monitoring of onset of swarming and follow the swarming over the season. Field inventory is contucted on several places throughout Sweden.

Survey for invasive species at import-points
To detect invasive species, but all Buprestidae, Cerambycidae and Curculionidae are also identified and counted. Field inventory is contucted by Swedish Board of Agriculture on multiple places like harbors and import nodes.

Damege cuased by wildlife
Balanced Ungulate populations
Annual field surveys conducted since 2021 to gather information on the population size of ungulates, forage quantity, forage quality and grazing damage in various reference areas. The damage recorded includes, amongst other things, grazed terminal shoots, broken stems and bark gnawing on stems.

Vole monitoring
Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Administrative County Boards monitor vole abundance in different reference areas. Field inventory has been contucted sence 1979.

BarkBin
Temporary monitoring through both field surveys and remote sensing. The surveys focus on bark gnawing caused by red deer. Monitoring has been carried out in Skåne, Kalmar, Halland, Västra Götaland, Kronoberg, Jämtland and Västerbotten during 2021 and 2022. The Swedish Forest Agency, in collaboration with the SLU Forest Damage Centre, has been responsible for the survey.
Contakt: Annika Felton, SLU
PlantBin
The Swedish Forest Agency conduct field inventories on browsing damage cuased by roe deer on young forest on Gotland. The inventories was made between 2021 and 2023.

Bett
A monitoring programme run by Skogforsk that collects data on browsing damage to pine and spruce across areas stretching from Småland in the south to Västerbotten in the north. Surveys have been carried out annually since 2012–2014 and compare browsing damage between fenced-off areas and open areas.

ÄBIN and forage forecast
The Moose Browsing Survey (Äbin) is a method for assessing wildlife damage in young forests with an average height of between 1 and 4 metres. Äbin measures the extent of browsing in young forests. In the Forest Browsing Survey service, you can filter results for different areas.

Wild Fires
Forest fires
Monitoring of forest fires during the fire season; multiple data sources/databases on local/regional forest fires, including controlled burns carried out for nature conservation purposes. The Swedish Forest Agency compiles the data into a single database. The monitoring is based on both field data and remote sensing, which is carried out annually.

Maps on forests: forest fires
The Swedish Forest Agency’s map tool contains information on suspected fires automatically detected by satellite sensors, as well as areas affected by forest fires since the summer of 2018.

Fire incident reports and database
The Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency (MCF) collects information on fire incidents through reports from the emergency services. This monitoring has been carried out annually since 1996. In addition to wildfires, the data also includes information on flooding, storms and landslides.

Forest fire risk maps
The Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency (MCF) has maps on forest fire risk. They consist of three maps – spread, fuel dryness and grass fire risk.
Fire fuel classification
Fire Fuel Classification is the MCF’s web-based mapping service, designed primarily to provide municipal fire and rescue services and county administrative boards with information on the fire risk posed by forest vegetation.
Wind and snow
Wind traps
Information is collected following storm events and includes the extent of the impact and the area affected. The information is collected by forestry companies. The scale and intensity of storm events are calculated.
Storm and wind damage
The Swedish Forest Agency estimates the extent of damage following major storms, based on visible changes in satellite data.

Vulnerability for Wind and snow damages
Remote sensing data from three test areas showing the vulnerability of the forest landscape to wind and snow damage, which can be used as a basis for decision-making in forest management, for example to reduce the risk of damage or to identify any damaged areas following an incident. National maps are expected to be completed by 2026.

Other types of data
National Forest Inventory
The annual publication Skogsdata presents up-to-date information on Sweden’s forests. Each issue also focuses on a topical theme. Skogsdata forms part of Sweden’s official statistics.

TFDI-data
The Target-tailored Forest Damage inventory is an action-oriented damage survey. The TFDI is carried out in consultation between the Swedish Forest Agency, the forestry sector and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
Sample-based plant and young forest inventory
The SLU Forest Damage Centre is responsible for the annual monitoring of damage to seedlings and young stands. Information on damaged stems is collected. The survey is carried out as part of the National Forest Inventory’s annual survey. Individual plots are surveyed every five years.
To the National Forest Inventory
Young forest inventory
Several forestry companies collect information on the condition of young forests at local and regional level.
Dead spruce trees
The Swedish Forest Agency has used remote sensing to estimate the number of clusters of dead spruce trees resulting from spruce bark beetle infestations.

Damaged trees
Some information on damaged trees is collected during the long-term trials at the experimental stations. The information is collected on an irregular basis.
The Field Research Unit is responsible for this information.
