Graduate studies
We have around 20 doctoral students at the Ecology Centre in Uppsala and at the Grimsö Research Station. During their doctoral studies scientific challenges will be combined with social activities.
We advertise all doctoral studentships under Vacancies at SLU. The number of doctoral students accepted vary year on year.
Being a doctoral student at the Department of Ecology makes you a part of a large group of doctoral students. We have many joint activities with the Department of Crop Production Ecology in the same building. Being a doctoral student is very interesting – but can also be tough at times. That is why it is important to have fun together. Doctoral students organise their own activities such as playing frisbee golf or having barbecues.
You will of course be joining the community at the department. We arrange pub nights once a month. Each year the entire department gather for a joint symposium where you can learn more about your colleagues. We also organise many scientific seminars and discussion groups. During off-hours you can go swimming in the local lakes or pick wild mushrooms in the forest.
During your doctoral studies you will attend a number of courses at our research schools. The available courses vary over time. You will learn everything from scientific methods to ways of communicating your research.
All doctoral students belong to a group of supervisors, and you can get additional support from our directors. When you complete your thesis it will be time to nail it to the tree at the Ecology Centre or the wall at the Grimsö Research Station. This nailing ritual is a particular Swedish tradition to celebrate that the thesis is (finally) completed.
The quotes have been gathered from a number of recent theses at the Department of Ecology
