Field Excursion Information

All field excursions depart from the central station Umeå (Järnvägstorget ).

Each excursion and bus departs at a different time. Please check the schedule carefully to find your assigned bus and departure time.

Your participant name tag indicates your field excursion and group. Most buses will be at full capacity, so it is not possible to switch between buses or excursions.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before departure to:

  • Check your name on the bus list
  • Collect color codes for field identification
  • Make sure your name tag is visible when boarding the bus

Buses usually depart strictly on time - no waiting for late arrivals

Full-Day Excursions

  • Krycklan Water, Forest, and Peatland
  • Departure: as scheduled on each bus below
  • Return: as scheduled on each bus below
  • Distance: ~60 km inland from Umeå (≈1-hour bus ride)

Half-Day Excursion

  • Röbäcksdalen
  • Departure: as scheduled below
  • Return: ~13:00

Meals: Fika and lunch will be provided for all excursions.

Clothing & Gear: Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes suitable for outdoor terrain.

The Krycklan catchment and Flakaliden experimental forest represent two of Sweden’s most valuable long-term research sites for exploring biogeochemical cycles in boreal landscapes.

Vindeln – Full Day Tour

The tour highlights long-term monitoring and management strategies in boreal peatlands, with visits to a natural mire and a rewetted peatland.

Trollberget Experimental Area (TEA)

A Swedish research station is conducting studies on forest ecology, biodiversity, and peatland restoration.

Röbäcksdalen Field Research Station, Umeå – Half Day Tour

This half-day excursion visits the Röbäcksdalen Field Research Station near Umeå, a site for long-term studies of boreal forest ecosystems. Participants will explore forested plots, streams, and experimental sites to observe vegetation dynamics, soil properties, and ecosystem processes. The tour provides insights into field research methods and ongoing ecological monitoring in northern Sweden.

Röbäcksdalen Field Research Station

A Umeå-based facility studying agriculture, animal science, biology, agro-ecology, soil, and environmental science, featuring a 120-cow dairy farm.
