Doctoral education

Page reviewed:  20/04/2026

We train Licentiates and PhDs in forest management, technology, mathematical statistics, and biology. The programme combines coursework and research. After graduation, about half remain at SLU, while the rest move on to the forestry sector.

As a doctoral student with us, you can develop and address research questions within our subject areas: forest remote sensing, forest inventory and sampling, forest planning, mathematical statistics applied to forestry, and landscape studies. Through a unique range of data collected within the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment programme, or through your own fieldwork and data collection, you can contribute to developing integrated approaches for the sustainable use of natural resources.

Today, doctoral education accounts for a significant share of the department’s research and methodological development, resulting in theses, scientific publications, and the dissemination of knowledge to society. The programme is individually tailored, and the supervisory team supports and follows your progress together with the department’s Director of Doctoral Studies.

Doctoral courses

Modelling forest landscape dynamics using an advanced decision support system
Sampling
Advanced sampling
Forestry for students without a forestry background

With us, you can also study statistics, and these courses are offered in collaboration with the Centre for Statistics. The following courses are available:

Statistics I: Basic statistics
Statistics III: Regression analysis
Statistics IV: Generalized Linear Models
