What does it mean to experience a field? Drawing on an art and geography collaborative research project, this talk investigates ›the field‹ as a particular landscape icon in the UK and elsewhere.
I will explore, firstly, how field landscapes are experienced, and, secondly, how they can be placed within broader cultures and histories. Examples include enclosure, ›improvement‹, and plantation.
In discussing this work, I will also bring out some broader themes and arguments about how we experience landscapes. Landscapes both hide things and are themselves hidden. By focusing on this, I will revisit and rethink the idea of landscape as something masking and cryptic, particularly in relation to georgic and critical views of landscape as work and labour.
This seminar includes a presentation followed by a joint conversation.
John Wylie is Professor of Cultural Geography at the University of Bristol, UK. He has been writing on landscape for over twenty years, focusing on conceptual debates, affective and experiential dimensions and literary geographies.
His work explores issues of perception, embodiment, emotion and memory, and approaches landscape through these lenses.
John Wylie is part of the international workshop »Rethinking landscape for societal transition: German–Scandinavian workshop« on 24–26 September 2026 that takes place at SLU and is organised by Andrew Butler, Mattias Qviström, and Vera Vicenzotti, at the Division of Landscape Architecture.
