Göran Bostedt

My main employment is as professor of economics with focus on sustainable development at the Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), Umeå University. I am also the deputy research director of the Centre for Environmental and Resource Economics (CERE), and visiting professor at Luleå University of Technology (LTU).

In my work as visiting professor of forest policy at SLU, I have collaborated on a model for forest landscape planning and analyzed its financial consequences for landowners, analyzed the role of Swedish forests in climate change mitigation, and studied the application of biodiversity conservation tenders in forests in Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. Furthermore, as part of the SLU-organised research school Reforest (https://www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz/reforest/) I have co-mentored a graduate student in Tanzania. I am also one of the editors of the Journal of Forest Economics (https://www.nowpublishers.com/JFE).

Generally my academic work, from my days as a PhD student to now, has been focused on research related to one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I have moved from research on nonmarket benefits in the forest and economic aspects of wildlife conservation to focusing on goal conflicts in Swedish environmental policy, to a currently wide research portfolio. This involves among other things Swedish forest policy, pastoralist livelihoods in East Africa, marine policy, and preferences for solar energy. 

My research has been funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (FORMAS), the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Swedish Forest Agency, and EU Biodiversa, among others.

I have successfully mentored four graduate students to a doctorate exam as main supervisor, and a further four students as assistant supervisor. I am currently main supervisor for two graduate students, both at USBE.

My teaching today is exclusively at USBE.
