Jag arbetar främst med forskning och viss del undervisning inom områdena epidemiologi och evidensbaserad veterinärmedicin. Rent praktiskt innebär detta till exempel hur man som praktiserande veterinär på ett systematiskt sätt håller sig uppdaterad med avseende den senaste utvecklingen. För att praktisera detta väl krävs vana av att använda epidemiologiska begrepp (epidemiologi, läran om förekomst och riskfaktorer för sjukdom i populationer). I forskningen har jag utgått från databaser från bl a försäkringsbolaget Agria (hund, häst och katt), Svenska kennelklubben och Svensk Mjölk. Främst har data från Agria använts för att belysa sjukdomspanoramat hos hund, häst och katt, men även fokuserat på att kontrollera informationens tillförlitlighet i olika databaser.

Veterinär 1986, disputerade 1999, professor i veterinärmedicinsk epidemiologi 2011.

Forskning

Jag har under en tid främst inriktat min forskning runt hästens hållbarhet med särskilt fokus på biomekanik. Hälta och asymmetri kan numera objektivt utvärderas genom att kvantifiera benens inbördes asymmetri med accelerometerbaserade system. Med sådana studerar vi hästens rörelsemönster, ffa på volt, intressant i många situationer, t ex asymmetrier vid från hältbedömning (ffa hälta) till dressyrridning (ffa sidighet). Ett särskilt intresseområde är hästryttarinteraktion, där biomekaniska metoder kombineras med etologiska observationer, under ridning som i så hög grad som möjligt liknar "vanlig" ridning (den som ryttaren gör varje dag). Bland de biomekaniska metoderna som används är t ex höghastighetsfilmning, tygeltrycksmätning och användning av sk inertial measurement unit teknik aktuella. De senare mäter bl a accelerationer och vinkelhastigheter och kan t ex användas till att bestämma hästens gångart eller kroppsdelars inbördes vinklar. I de två senare fallen kan teknikerna användas även ute i fält vilket kan möjliggöra större epidemiologiska studier där många träningsfaktorer (inte bara rörelsemätningar) kan registreras.  

 

Mitt senaste projekt är kartläggning av främst djurägares kostnader för veterinärvård, men även andra företeelser inom svensk och internationell djursjukvård är av intresse. Projektets första mål har varit att genomföra en omfattande analys av kostnaderna för veterinärvård för djurägare och 2 publikationer har presenterats hittills. Inom detta projekt studerar vi även hur veterinärer upplever och påverkas av ansvarsnämnden för djurens hälso och sjukvård och själva ärenden som skickas till denna. Detta är ett dynamiskt och internationellt projekt som rättar sig efter vad som är mest praktiskt att göra för tillfället. Vad gäller priserna syftar projektet till att ge avnämarna, alla de som är intresserade av priser inom djursjukvården, säkrast möjliga beslutsunderlag för att kunna välja, planera och besluta.
