Eleven new SLU professors give lectures
From ruminant nutrition and lame horses to the crops, forests and cities of the future. A wide range of topics will be covered when our new professors give their inauguration lectures on April 23–24 in Uppsala. The lectures can also be followed online.
Every year, a number of new professors are appointed at SLU, and in connection with their inauguration, they give short, open, popular science lectures. This year, these lectures will take place on Thursday 23 April and Friday 24 April. Of the eleven new professors, eight are based in Uppsala and three in Alnarp.
Will the crops of the future be hardy through traits from wild relatives that have adapted to extreme environments after experiencing whole-genome duplication? What paved the way for the expansion of farming with seasonal movements of livestock, and the emergence of large-scale reindeer herding during the 17th and 18th centuries? Can cultured human cells reveal harmful chemical mixtures in drinking water? These are examples of questions that the new professors will address in their lectures.
Each lecture will begin with a short film presenting the professor and a conversation between the professor and moderator Malin von Essen. After this introduction, each professor will give a 15-minute popular science lecture, followed by a question-and-answer session. Six of the lectures will be given in Swedish and five in English, as stated in the programme.
The lectures will be broadcast live and can be followed at https://www.slu.se/professors, or on site in Studio Ultuna in the Teaching Building (Undervisningshuset) on SLU's Uppsala campus, Almas allé 10. There is limited seating in the studio, and the lectures will also be streamed to the adjacent Room K.
The broadcast will take place in real time and it will be possible to submit questions during the lecture via nyaprofessorer@slu.se. No login or pre-registration is required.
More information about the webcast and about the professors – including press photos and films – can be found at www.slu.se/professors. Subtitled versions of the recorded lectures will be published on each professor’s web page.
