Min forskningsinriktning är naturvårdsbiologi och skogshistoria.

Jag har i 30 år forskat på naturvård i skogen och på skogshistoria - och i gränssnittet mellan dessa två discipliner. I min forskning undersöker jag bland annat hur man kan använda skogshistorien för att förstå hur naturliga och människostyrda faktorer påverkar den biologiska mångfalden i skogsekosystem.

Under årens lopp har jag blivit allt mer intresserade av naturvård inom skogsbruket, det vill säga naturvård i skogar som i första hand används för virkesproduktion. Jag undersöker effekten av så kallad generell naturvård, såsom lämnande av död ved och evighetsträd vid avverkning. Även trädslagssammansättnings betydelse för mångfalden är ett viktigt forskningsområde. Resultaten av min forskning är av intresse för skogssektorn i södra Sverige, men det är också relevant för hantering av produktionsskogar internationellt. Jag fokuserar på de artgrupper som jag har erfarenhet av, nämligen fåglar och vedberoende skalbaggar.
