Renewing thinking and action for new times – Welcome to the 3rd edition of Ruralities and Regions in Transition

We hereby invite scholars and practitioners of rural and regional development and studies to the 3rd edition of the National Research Conference Ruralities and Regions in Transition. The conference will take place 11-12 November 2026 in Örebro, under the overarching theme "Renewing thinking and action for new times".

Join us November 11-12, 2026!

Rural areas across the globe have become sites of ‘sustainable’ development. Through climate interventions such as wind power, climate smart forestry and agriculture and mining, rural areas are taken for granted by politicians and companies alike as the basis for sustainable futures. In parallel, a sense of crisis is an underlying current in rural areas. Depopulation, conflicts over land as well as increasing xenophobic rhetoric are setting the boundaries for what actually is sustainable development in rural and regional politics. Policy measures that strive for sustainable business practices and citizens can have contradictory outcomes for everyday rural lives and the rural economy. But stories of rural and regional development are not only of struggles over resources, colonial domination and exclusions but also about local mobilisation, innovation and collective action aimed at strengthening communities and meeting the everyday needs of the people who live in and care for rural environments. All this and more demand close examination and reflection on the rural. We need new ways to think and act in times of transition. Please join us in Örebro in November! Nordic research conference for rural development researchers

Nordic Ruralities is a research conference that is arranged every other year between the Nordic countries. The conference was last arranged by SLU and took place in Kiruna from the 3rd-4th December 2024, with support from Uppdrag Landsbygd. We see the forum as a chance to exchange knowledge, experiences and perspectives related to Nordic ruralities. In previous years, the conference attracted up to 300 researchers from a variety of disciplines and was an excellent opportunity for interdisciplinary discussions. The last conference’s theme was "New paths to sustainable transition", with a particular focus on place identity and people, sustainable use of natural resources, rural economy and entrepreneurship as well as rural policy and politics.
