For Biotechnology-based Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases in Veterinary Medicine

This mandate as OIE Collaborating Centre is shared between SLU and the National Veterinary Institute (SVA).

The OIE, or the World Organisation for Animal Health (previously known as Office International des Epizooties) is an international intergovernmental organisation with the main objective to help its 178 member countries to protect and harmonize animal health and welfare at the worldwide level. To achieve this, expertise and assistance is provided to the member countries by the network of 40 Collaborating Centres and 225 Reference Laboratories across the world.

 As a collaborating centre of the OIE the mandate is to:

  • Operate as a centre of research, expertise, standardisation and dissemination of techniques within the specified area.
  • Propose or develop any procedure which will facilitate harmonisation of international regulations applicable to the surveillance and control of animal disease.
  • Place expert consultants at the disposal of the OIE and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

  In addition a collaborating centre of the OIE may:

  • Provide scientific and technical training to personnel from Member Countries of the OIE within the specified are.
  • Organise scientific meetings on behalf of the OIE.
  • Coordinate scientific and technical studies in collaboration with other laboratories or organisations publish and disseminate any information in our sphere of competence which may be useful to Member Countries of the OIE.
