The aim of the course is to provide knowledge required for the role of cultivation manager in different types of company and visitor centres within horticulture.
On completion of the course students will be able to:
identify a basic range of ornamental shrubs on the basis of their winter foliage
review cultivation-related concepts and phenomena
plan a cultivation on the basis of geographical location, sales channels, company size and technical standards
analyse cultivation-related problems and suggest solutions for a well-defined problem
evaluate, present and apply cultivation technology information.
Content
The course encompasses production of fruit and vegetables and ornamental plants, where growing is carried out in horticultural companies with outdoor, greenhouse or plant nursery areas. The course deals with the most commonly occurring horticultural cultures and cultivation methods. The produce, in this instance the product presented on the market, is followed up to eventual storage.
Particular emphasis is placed on the following aspects:
Analysis of cultivation conditions.
Management of climate, irrigation and plant nutrient supply.
Choice of plant nutrient sources.
Choice of energy sources.
Methods for preventing and controlling pests and weeds.
Propagation and plant establishment.
Vegetative development and control of plan morphology.
Flower formation and fruit setting.
Greenhouses, storage premises and other commercial buildings.
Logistics and organisation of work.
Machine chains.
Suitability for storage and shelf-life.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
The examination consists of written and/or oral examination and reporting of assignments. To pass the course, a pass grade in the written exam and assignments and approved participation in compulsory parts.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
