Basic floristics and arthropod faunistics from a plant protection and nature conservation perspective
Do you want to know which plants and bugs you encounter in nature and in your local environment? Do you need to recognize plants and insects that are important for crops, or which can be affected by our use of the land and the landscape? This course is taught as a distance course at 50% pace and covers basic systematics and identification of plants and insects, which we will follow as the summer season progresses.
Knowledge about plants and animals is fundamental for understanding the functionality of natural environments and agricultural landscapes. This includes their general ecology as well as specific beneficial organisms, pests, and weeds that affect them. It includes the basics in systematics and identification of plants and arthropods, primarily insects, including some recognition of individual species and important groups. The course has a broad and general outlook, with a focus on organisms important for crop production and nature conservation, including organisms that constitute indicators by virture of their biology and general growth site preferences.
Teaching is mostly distance via self study with determination literature, web-based lectures and recorded material. Distance-based feedback and supervision via your own digital photos and in real time via the web. We also provide teacher-led excursions and microscope exercises on site, with collected materials. Participation in at least one combined excursion and microscope exercise over 2 or 3 days is mandatory for completing the course.

The examination consists of written and practical exams as well as assignments. For a passed course, passed exams and assignments as well as participation in compulsory parts are required.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

**Kommentar: **Boken är en nyckelbok till familjer med exempelbilder på familjerna, men tar er inte till art. Den kräver också att man har tillgång till en stereolupp. De visar dock bra exempelbilder från alla familjer (och hos bin till släkte). Originalet från 1997 är slutsålt hos förlaget sedan länge. Media-tryck på Lunds universitet har ett nytryck eller faksimiltryck av den gamla insektsboken. Inte någon fältflora pga sin betydande storlek, men ett utomordentligt referensverk för att identifiera observerade växter med hjälp av bilder.
