Objectives

The purpose of the course is for the student, based on knowledge of different types of physical impairments, to acquire theoretical and some practical knowledge regarding a selection of evaluation and rehabilitation methods within rehabilitation in animal care, primarily regarding the horse, dog and cat species.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

• describe how the various tissues of the locomotor apparatus react in case of injury, during healing and at different degrees of load,
• describe the scientific basis for various rehabilitation techniques and account for indications, contraindications, explanatory models and mechanisms of action,
• propose, based on an overview assessment of different types of physical functional loss, suitable rehabilitation measures, and be able to document this,
• practically perform a selection of rehabilitation and evaluation techniques,
• critically evaluate the scientific documentation in the field of rehabilitation in relation to "Complementary and alternative veterinary medicine", and justify the importance of a scientific approach,
• reflect on and compare various issues regarding ethics, animal protection and worker protection, which may arise during rehabilitation work.

Content

The course covers evidence-based rehabilitation in animal care, with a focus on identification, registration and rehabilitation measures, based on different types of physical loss of function, and related ethical issues.

The course uses different teaching methods to promote the students' learning and discussions through lectures, seminars, exercises and skill training sessions on models, live and/or dead animals. In this way, the student gains theoretical knowledge and, to some extent, practical skills in rehabilitation within animal care, with a focus on rehabilitation measures based on different types of physical loss of function. Through reports, discussions and review of articles, the student is trained in evidence-based rehabilitation in animal care, ethics, animal welfare and responsibility issues related to veterinary rehabilitation work.

The course focuses on the following general skills:
Critical thinking, ethical consideration, scientific methods, information literacy, problem solving, independence and oral communication.

The following sections are mandatory:
Seminar, exercises, practical skills training.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written examinations and passed participation in mandatory sections.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
