Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of business management within the green sector, particularly focusing on companies within forest and landscape management. The course will give the students basic knowledge about marketing, business administration, business management and corporate governance.
After completion of the course, the students will be able to:
- describe and apply basic theories on small business management in relation to sustainable development
- establish and assess a business plan from a business concept, a marketing approach, basic strategic perspectives, and business administration models
- describe the differences between different legal business types
- describe, explain, and apply different tools within financial management
- describe and apply basic theories on leadership and organisation with an emphasis on how groups function, and how to plan, lead and evaluate project activities
- know about and explain basic concepts and rules in business law, with an emphasis on agreements
- know about and be able to explain central concepts within marketing and be able to apply basic marketing tools.
Content
*Subject matter:
*This is a basic course in business administration aimed at entrepreneurship within forest and landscape management. The course includes the following subjects: organisation and leadership, strategic issues, marketing, business planning and sustainable development. It is based on different cases where these aspects are treated – a small company (landowner, entrepreneur), a larger company in forestry or landscape management, and a non-profit organisation (government authority, non-governmental organisation, politically governed organisations). The course also contains forest economy, where for instance effects on a forest stand of business factors and decisions are studied. It is divided into four modules, where concepts and methods are successively treated:
- The small company
- Forest economy
- The large company
- The non-profit organisation

***The course consists of different forms of education to favour learning and discussions: Lectures, literature studies, exercises, seminars, study visits and oral and written reports.
The course focuses on the following generic competences: Critical thinking, problem solving, use of techniques, oral and written communication, cooperation, time planning.
These elements are mandatory: Exercises, seminars, study visits, oral presentations.
Grading form

Passed written and oral tasks, passed exam, and completed mandatory tasks.
If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
