Objectives
The purpose of the course is to give students a deeper understanding of organizational theory, which describes and explains how organizations develop and are reshaped in a changing environment. The course builds on a basic understanding of organizational theory in order to analyse and interpret organizations’ change processes with regard to the dynamics of their environment. The structure of the course should also contribute to the development of the participants’ generic academic skills.
After completing the course, the student should be able to
- account for and apply theory that explains organizations and their change processes,
- account for and apply theory that explains the interaction of organizations with their environment,
- analyse organizations’ change processes and resilience in empirical cases, as well as interpret and critically discuss alternative courses of action to changes in the organization’s environment
- show ability for critical thinking, discussion skills, oral as well as written presentation and ability to work together in a group.
Content
Subject content:
The course includes theories and models that explain how organizations are part of their environment, and thus influence and are influenced by the structure in which they find themselves. The course uses different theoretical perspectives to illuminate and understand the complexity of organizational development – for example, organizational change and resilience, entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategic management. The course clarifies how organizations influence and are influenced by the structure in which they find themselves and the ability of organizations to resist and react to internal and external changes. The course provides examples of agricultural, forestry and sustainable business.
Course implementation:
The course uses different teaching methods to promote students' learning and discussions through:
Lectures, seminars and exercises. The teaching methods are carried out both individually and in groups.
The course focuses on the following general competences:
Critical thinking, discussion skills, oral and written communication, as well as teamwork.
The following components are compulsory:
Written exercises, seminars and presentations.

Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written examination.
Approved written assignments.
Approved participation in seminars.
Approved participation in presentations.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
